Monday, June 29 2009 - London Runner Athletes Step up to National Level with 3 Top-10 Performances at Canadian Track Championships |
Seven London Runner Distance Club athletes competed in the Canadian Track and Field Championships and Worlds Trials in Toronto over the past 4 days, putting on a strong showing led by three top-10 placings in the 5,000m, Steeplechase, and 10,000m. This was a great step forward for the London and area athletes, and hopefully a sign of more national level performances in the future from this young group. Outstanding performances by Adrian Walton and Kyle O'Neill highlighted the weekend, and the group will now look forward to the Ontario Senior Championships in Windsor next weekend with podium finishes in mind.

Between the June 3rd 'Summer Kick-Off' and the June 9th 'New Balance 1500m Night', the TD Waterhouse stadium was host to great races by excellent athletes over every distance from 800m to 5000m.
Outstanding results at these meets include:

-the strongest Womens 5,000m ever held at TD Waterhouse Stadium, including 8 women under the 18-minute barrier, led by Courtney Laurie
-back-to-back wins by Sheed Khan in the 800m June 3rd (1:52.87) and 1500m June 9th (3:51.20) against very strong fields
-a deep Mens 5,000m field that produced 9 sub-15:00 times, led by Robert Kitz
-World Youth 1,500m standard achieved by Megan Beverley (4:32.25), and numerous male athletes
-Pan Am Junior 1,500m standard achieved by Nadine Frost (4:34.51)
-and dozens of other athletes achieving standards for Canadian Track and Field Championships
Top London Runner athletes were:
-Adrian Walton placing 2nd in the June 3rd 5,000m in 14:28.66, his 2nd fastest lifetime performance
-Kyle O'Neil placing 3rd in the June 3rd 3,000m Steeplechase in 9:02.10, a personal best
-Bethany McChesney breaking the 18-minute barrier for the first time in the June 3rd 5,000m

New Balance Contributing Love (and Prizes):
Following the goals of their current campaign to get people to LOVE running more, New Balance Canada came on board as title sponsor of the June 9th 1500m Night and contributed merchandise for the winners of every heat, along with free shoes for top overall performances.
