On Sunday, May 5th, the London 10,000m (including Athletics Ontario 10,000m Championships) will kick off the 9th annual Runners' Choice London Distance Series. 2012 Ontario and Canadian 10,000m Champion Leslie Sexton will return to defend her title. While Sexton was the only local athlete to race the 10,000m last year, the 2013 edition will see a significant number of London-based athletes toe the line for the 25 lap Championship event.
New for the 2013 edition is a Team Challenge in which both Team and Individual trophies will be awarded to the top Athletics Canada-registered club in the 10,000m. Clubs can enter up to 4 AC-registered athletes - 2 male and 2 female - with the top three scorers counting towards the team score. For more information on the Team Challenge and meet, please refer to the technical package.
The meet will also feature 800m and 1,500m races. The mens 1,500m is already shaping up to be a fast one, with recent World XC competitor Matt Walters looking to pursue the FISU Championships standard, paced by local Aaron Hendrikx.
On-line registration is already underway. Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 5th, when we'll crown both the Ontario Championships and Team Challenge 10,000m Champions!
April is a great time to get involved in a Youth running program for kids ages 6 and up. Youth-oriented running programs provide a great opportunity to learn from outstanding coaches about the fun of training and racing. For those aged 6-11, Matt Suda coaches a summer clinic that will run from April 20th to June 29th. These sessions will take place on Saturdays and each session will include a warm-up, a funtivity, and a workout.
For ages 11-15, Leslie Sexton coaches a competitive Youth Program that meets twice a week during the Summer session (April-July). While Leslie will share the tips that have helped her become a Canadian Champion, her focus is to provide a positive introduction to competitive running, with a long-term focus in mind.
