Monday, May 12 2014 - Ontario 10,000m Championships Preview

This Sunday, May 18th, the London Runner Distance Club will host the Athletics Ontario 10,000m Championships for the 9th consecutive year. 19 athletes have entered the 10,000m Championships - the 2nd largest field during this 9-year run - with late Championship entries, as well as Open entries, still being accepted. The race is part of the 2nd Runners' Choice London Distance Series meet of the summer and will also feature open 800m and 1,500m races.

2-time defending Champion Leslie Sexton (London Runner Distance Club) will look to win her 4th Ontario 10,000m Championship in 5 years. Other former Champions include 2012 winner Sami Jibril (Athletics Toronto) and 2009 winner Derek Nakluski (Toronto Olympic Club). There are also 2 athletes with Ontario 10,000m silver medals to their names - London Runner teammates Kyle O'Neill and Courtney Laurie. The top seed on the Mens side is Tristan Woodfine (Speed River), who is competing in his first Ontario 10,000m Championship.

For the 2nd consecutive year, the London 10,000m includes a Team Challenge open to all Canadian clubs; the Team competition involves 3 runners per club, including 1 of each gender. Unfortunately, the womens field is currently made up entirely of London Runner Distance Club athletes, making them the only eligible Team; hopefully, some late entries will bring forth a challenger.

Sunday, May 4 2014 - RCLDS Kicks Off Tonight

The 2014 Runners' Choice London Distance Series kicks off the summer Track season tonight at TD Stadium with the Forest City 5k meet, featuring races over 800m, 5,000m, and 4x800m. Close to 40 local athletes will compete in the meet; out-of-town groups include athletes from Windsor, Guelph, and Laval.

The 800m races will begin at 7:15pm, where the highlight is expected to be a strong Mens 800m featuring top Windsor athletes Alex Ullman and Corey Bellemore, both seeded under the 1:50 mark. The mixed 5,000m field, which will span 3 separate sections, is highlighted by strong entries from the London Runner and Speed River clubs, with many women looking to break the 18 minute barrier. In honour of the novelty May the Fourth holiday, the host London Runner Distance Club is awarding a bonus prize of Star Wars DVDs to the fastest male and female in the 5,000m.

Spectators wishing to watch the races will be welcomed with free parking and free admission to the facility. The races will finish up by 9:20pm. For those that cannot make it in person, there will be Live Results thanks to Windsor Timing. The next RCLDS meet takes place on Sunday, May 18th; the London 10,000m includes the Ontario 10,000m Championships, along with open 800m and 1,500m races.
