Saturday, April 18 2015 - London Calling: 24 To Go!

24 to go! It's one of the more intimidating things a distance runner hears, or sees as they complete the first lap of a 10,000m and look up at the lap counter. The daunting task of racing the longest championship track distance will discourage some, but the appeal of challenging oneself is exactly what draws athletes to the annual London 10,000m, which has been selected to host both the 2015 Athletics Ontario and Athletics Canada 10,000m Championships.

At the 2014 London 10,000m, Sami Jibril of Athletics Toronto was the top male, winning a thrilling race after leading much of the way, showing a confidence reflective of his strong road racing resume. Leslie Sexton of London Runner was the top woman in 2014 - winning the Ontario 10,000m Championship for the third consecutive year - just a few seconds off the TD Stadium and Runners' Choice London Distance Series record of 33:10 set by Megan Brown in 2011. Sexton is already registered for the 2015 London 10,000m and is eager for another record attempt.

2015 London 10,000m entries are open, and already include a large contingent from the McGill Olympic Club. There is a Championship entry deadline of noon on Monday, May 4th and an April 26th deadline for Elite athletes looking for free accommodations. The host club is able to help with accommodations in part thanks to support from the City of London Sport Tourism. The London 10,000m is an Open event, with a 'soft' entry standard of 40:00 for scheduling purposes. The 10,000m heats will be preceded by a 3k Community Fun Run as well as open 1,500m track races. There is no charge for parking or entry to the facility.

Whether you're racing or spectating, be sure to mark the Sunday, May 10th London 10,000m meet on your calendars. London is calling and there's 24 to go!
